What Junie's World is

Junie's World is a series of picture books told by Junie, a six-year-old autistic girl, in her own words. Junie notices everything: the hum of the fridge, the bumpy line inside a sock, the exact number of stairs to her room. When she flaps her hands or hums, it's because she's happy or calming down, and the people who love her know that.

These books are for autistic kids who want to see themselves in a story, and for every kid who wants to understand a friend. Nobody in Junie's World tries to fix her. When something is too loud or too much, the grown-ups and friends around her make room, and the day gets better for everyone.

How the books are written

Every Junie book follows five simple rules.

  1. Junie tells the story. We hear it from her, or stay very close to her, so readers see the world the way she does.
  2. Real, specific senses. Sounds, textures and lights are described the way a child feels them, like "a slap on my ears," not in medical words.
  3. Stims and routines are comfort. Flapping, humming, rocking and counting are how Junie shows joy or settles herself. They are never treated as problems.
  4. Big feelings have a reason you can see. When Junie has a meltdown, the story shows what caused it, like a balloon popping.
  5. The people around her adapt. Family and friends change the room, the noise or the plan. Junie doesn't have to change who she is.
